Jointed rock is one of the rocks that is met often in engineering construction.Because of its complexity and regularity,more and more scholars attach importance to find an appropriate method that can analyse the rocks rule of deformation and destructility to estimate the jointed rocks stability.There are many methods to analyse the jointed rocks ,numerical simulation method is one of these methods.Now,the numerical simulation method can be concluded into two classesxontinuous medium model and discrete medium model.Block element method is a discrete medium model that is fit for analysing problem of small deformation and strength.Now summarize as follows:1.In this paper,theory of block element method is introduced in detail and content based on triangle element is emphasized.2.Considering the difficulity of adapting mesh,rocks are dissected quadrangle elements,then the affect of faultage is thought of,elements are transformed triangle elements.3.When the slope stability is studied,upper bound limit analysis using block element method is introduced in this paper,constructing the velocity field in the interface which is subject to the energy-work balance equation,the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion, the flow rule and the boundary conditions,then determine the minimum value of safety factor.Finally,some problems needed to be studied further are discussed.
