With the fast development of the automotive industry, the number of the automobile increases sharply, from which the pollutant emissions seriously affect human health and the environment. Automobile exhaust regulations become stricter in all countries.Adapting to the requirement of the emission legislation, an EGR system was applied to a diesel engine to reduce NOx emission. The effects of different EGR rates on the emissions and performances of the engine were investigated by the engine test, on which the EGR rates of different engine mode will be optimized based. The results showed that EGR can reduce NOx emission of this diesel engine significantly under various operation conditions, but it will have negative influence on the smoke, the effective torque and the effective specific fuel consumption with the increasing of EGR rates. So there will be an optimum working state of EGR rates under various operation conditions. Through the optimum emission test for EGR, it proves that the optimized EGR strategy can reduce the NOx emission efficiently and limit the negative influence on other emission and the performance of engine.
