Matrix converter has some advantages such as variable power factor, the omission of DC segment, variable output voltage, frequency and phase, etc. It has been the hot point of power convert research.In this paper, mathematics mechanism fundamental principle circuit components and other conversion functions of matrix converter are described, control method and current commutation are emphasized. Among several control methods, voltage control method and current control method are researched and compared. Venturini Control method Line-to-line Voltage Control method Chen Voltage Control method and Space Vector Control method which belong to voltage control method are listed, and Band Hysteresis Current Control method and Predictive Current Control method which belong to current control method are listed. At the same time, several main control methods are compared. Among current commutation strategy, four-step current commutation and two-step current commutation are researched and compared. On the base of comparing of control methods, two modules are built, one is based on optimized modulation matrix, and the other is based on indirect space vector. The function of control module is realized by compiling process under the Matlab platform, and the result proved the good performance of voltage transformation and frequency transformation. And the end of the paper, Verilog HDL language is used to realize the four-step current commutation under the Max+plusII platform, and the waveform shows accuracy of design of the circuit.The purpose of this paper is discussing the prime principle, control method, current commutation of matrix converter. Some valuable experiences and significant conclusions are given by theory analysis, simulation and experiment, which establish the basis for the further studies.
