Metalworking practice is one of the compulsory undergraduate practice courses, is a valid approach to train practice ability of them. It can enable students understand traditional mechanical manufacturing technics and modern manufacturing technology, effectively alleviate the common fault for poor working ability that all students involved. The added demonstration of producting process in the metalworking practice can make students more understand the general machinery manufacturing process , become familiar with the mechanical processing methods in common use, and have the preliminary ability to choose processing methods, finish processing analysis and draw technical rules, these will lay a solid foundation for the follow-up courses. Machinery manufacturing production process is essentially a process of changing resource to accessories or productions, it is a large production system combining of many equipment, material, human and processing orderly. Automatic production line is a typical electro-hydraulic system which not only make manufacturing processing run orderly and automatically, but also greatly enhance the production efficiency and product quality, is one of developments in the field of machinery. Therefore, the study and design of a small automated production line aimed at metalworking practice is very necessary.Small automated production line is used electro-hydraulic proportional control applied in the hydraulic system to ensure the accuracy and rapid response of location, programmable logic controller to control logic and order. First, the system components of small automatic production line is analysed, processing plan is proposed, and the mechanical structures of every part and overall layout is designed. Secondly, hydraulic system is designed based the mechanical structures and processing plan, including the selection of hydraulic components, basic loops and schematic diagram. Then the electro-hydraulic proportional control system used in system is demonstrated and calculated. Through computer simulation, we wil get dynamic response and stability curve of system, and analyse the simulation results. By changing the parameters of system components, the system will be achieved its optimal performance. Finally, the controlled process of system is analysed. Programmable controller is used in small automated production line by logic control through the selection of hardware and the programme of software, thus system is achieved the full range of automation.The small automatic production line is flexible, better maneuverability, security and stability. It opens up comprehensive application of electro-hydraulic proportional control technology and programmable controller technology in the field of industrial automation, provides a new direction of development for industrial production automation technology. It also provides students of understanding of machinery manufacturing process in mechanical engineering training.
