This article analyses the basic concepts about the definition, the principle and the effect of the relay protection and so on. It explains the important position, the development history, the status quo, the development trend in the future and the defects about the relay protection of the electric power system during the electric power production.Due to the original design defects or the one-time equipment operation mode or the revision of the operating regulations, some of the relay protection units which are in operation at present can not adapt to the requirements of the electric power safety production. However, if they are completely changed, it will be dealt with a great many manpower, material and financial resources. Thus, taking into account, it is necessary to conduct the technical reformation on the current relay protection units. It needs only to fit some more components and some simple wire connections behind the screen in order to save to cost.This article takes five actual running relay protection units for example and analyses the technical defects which exist in some running of the relay protection units from various aspects of the design principle of the relay protection, the electric power safety production regulations, the remained causes about the reformation of the old equipment and etc. Through looking up and studying the information of the relay protection about the same kind of equipment at home and broad, we put forward and sort out the optimized project of solution by comparison with borrowing the new design principle and the secondary loop and taking into account the defects of the current running equipment adequately. We carried out the reformation to the current relay protection units. The main completed work includes:Firstly, the research of high voltage bus bar charging protection unit technical reformation project. Aiming at the charging protection for the electromagnetic bus bar, we only take into account to charge for the bus bar and the circuit without considering the design defects of the "long period" running mode for the mains transformer charging and the charging protection. Analyzing from the basic principle, secondary loop, operation flexibility, safety and reliability, we put forward and carried out the measure of improvement.Secondly, the research of the reformation plan of WXH-110 series microcomputer circuit protection units. Aiming at using the close circuit in common between the remote control close and the protection close for the WXH-110 series microcomputer circuit protection can't avoid the defects of exiting the re-close protection when the electric power field operation regulations need to be closed by the remote control. Tow kinds of the reformation plans have been put forward that one is to divide the remote control close circuit and the protection close circuit from the inner of the protection units and another is to alter the external secondary loop of the protection units to access to the closed re-close when the remote control closes. We chose the optimized plan and implemented the technical reformation.Thirdly, the wrong action head been analyzed and the technical reformation head been taken for the start of the re-close without corresponding to the integrated self-station. At present, identification of the circuit breaker stealthy trip by the re-close function in the microcomputer protection is only to rely on the position (location) of the circuit breaker trip. During restoring after the wire of circuit breaker control circuit unit isn't perfective, it will be very easy to cause the wrong action of re-close. By using the spare relay to simulate the control handle, and serialize the node to start the circuit closed re-close. This may solve the problem of wrong action of the re-close.Fourthly, 220kV XUEPO transformer substation 220kV bus bar protection action accident analysis and prevention.Fifthly, 10kV microcomputer circuit protection and burns crash analysis of shutting floodgate and technical transformation. The protection units after reformation have been improved greatly on its performance and eliminated the safety hidden troubles during running. It meets the field running regulations and requirements and increases the reliability of the power network in operation. Its economic and social beneficial results are enormous.
