Facing increasingly intensive competitions today, the corporations put more andmore emphasis on achieving quick and effective new products developments. Arational design flow will not only shorten the developing time but also bring successto the development. In Automobile manufacturing industry changing the appearanceof the car is always employed as a retrofit design method to generate new types of theproduct. However, to change the appearance of the car can not replace the wholedesign, but should only be a rewarding complement of the whole design. Focusingespecially on the new product development, this thesis applies the present CADsystem effectively and reasonably combining reverse engineering, an important andwidely used method in industrial design, to realize the retrofit design of theautomobile body model.During the nonparametric modeling of the automobile styling, to introduce thesurface styling theories and software tools for surface construction, can be apracticable plan of the automobile retrofit design. The surface construction in thisthesis includes two parts: one means surface reconstruction after the product surfacedigitalization; the other one means to modify the generated CAD model by utilizingthe strong styling function of the CAD system in order to meet with the requirementsof the final styling drawing. Thus, the theories and specific measure of the surfaceconstruction shall be specially focused on in this article.For the above reason, the main research of the thesis includes: to elaborate thedevelopment and the present condition of the automobile styling design and thesurface construction; to analyze and summarize the characteristics of the technologiesof reverse engineering, and introduce these technologies into the practical use of thesequential engineering and automobile retrofit design; to summarize the strengths andshortcomings of the domestic and foreign algorithms of the curve and surface styling;to introduce and compare several ordinary software, and choose CATIA V5 as thedesign platform of surface construction; elaborate the smoothing of surface and theconcept of A-class surface, and illustrate the actual handling and evaluating methodsof surface smoothing; to take the front face of the automobile body model as a realcase of automobile design in the last part to illuminate how to finish the retrofit designby use of the given model and the object drawing in an efficacious way in order tosave developing time and improve design efficiency.During the creating model of automobile body, this paper has learned handling for automobile body model from several ways of surface construction, andsummarized the skills in the practical application.
