The ride comfort and handling stability of the automobile have close relationship with the suspension system. As structure parameters of traditional passive suspension can not adaptively change with external conditions, the improvement of dynamic performance, is very difficult. However, structure parameters of semi-active suspension, such as damping, spring stiffness and so on, are adjustable, which can serve the needs much better. At the same time, compared with active suspension, the semi-active suspension has simple structure and low price, so it is regarded highly and widely. In this paper, we have done the simulated and experimented research on the quarter-car suspension system which equipped the magneto-reological damper.Firstly, based on the vehicle dynamics theories, the dynamics model of the quarter-car semi-active suspension system has been designed in this dissertation. In the foundation of knowing the sky control strategy,sliding mode control strategy and fuzzy control strategy, we designed the sky controller, the variable structure mode-following controller and the fuzzy controller. Using the Matlab and Simulink, we simulated the quarter-car semi-active suspension system, and achieved the better results.On the test rig of magneto-reological damper, we present an experiment research for it. By analyzing the results we can know the hysteresis behavior of the MR dampers. Based on the experiment result, we founded the polynomial model of the magneto-reological damper, and gain the coefficients using the Matlab curve fitting tool. From the results, we know that the polynomial model can predict the hysteresis behavior of the MR dampers very well, and this model make convenient for knowing the controlled current, so it can take advantage of the using of the MR dampers.Finally, we present an experiment on a test rig of quarter car model equipped MR damper, and do a research on the fuzzy controller of the semi-active suspension system. Through the experiment we gain the acceleration and the suspension deflection of the sine excitation. The results proved that the fuzzy strategy is efficient for the semi-active suspension system, it improved the performance of suspension.
