With the implement of the develop-the-west strategy in China and the structural readjustment of the electric power, the exploitation of hydropower resources is being speeded up. More and more dams are being built, especially high arch dams. The security of high arch dam is taking abutment stability as the premise. In this study, contrapose the deficiency of security index, abutment stability safety factor against sliding is used as aim function; the genetic algorithm is adopted in the optimization design for arch dam. The chief research work is as follows:1. Methods and theories of structure optimization in arch dam are summarized. Tt is proposed taking abutment stability safety factor of arch dam as the objective of optimizing, and rational body form of high arch dam is studied on the basis of calculating with the Trial-load method.2. Basic theories of abutment stability problem of arch dam are summarized systematically. Taking the method of rigid body limiting equilibrium as the theoretical foundation and computer language Fortran as the programming foundation, the two-dimensional and three-dimensional calculating procedure for the abutment stability is worked out, and the feasibility of the procedure is analyzed through calculating the example.3. Commonly used optimization algorithm and new development in the optimization design of arch dam is analyzed. Hereditary algorithm as a overall optimization method, has the characteristics of great searching coverage rate, small amount of particular information for solving, easy to forming the common algorithm procedure and so on. Comparing to the analysis of optimizing algorithm, it is proposed applying the hereditary algorithm to the optimization design of arch dam, and finished the optimization design program that adapted to the optimization design of arch dam.4. Combing the project example, the abutment stability for high arch dam is studied with the Trial-load method and calculating program of abutment stability. On this basis, it is finished the optimization design for the size of this arch dam and received a group of research results worth consulting.
