The half bridge PFC converter is usually used in AC/DC stage of UPS. The input and output of the converter don't need to be isolated, but in the 220V grid, it has the disadvantage of high voltage on switches which equals the output voltage. Three-level diode clamped half bridge PFC converter succeeds to the advantage of the half bridge PFC converter, and the voltage on every switch is only half the output voltage. Because of this, it suits to the 220V grid. The operation principle of three-level diode clamped half bridge PFC converter is analyzed in detail, and the simplified model is presented. The loop is designed. Based on three control strategies which are analyzed, multiple control strategy which is usually used in Boost PFC converter is presented. It is adapted in the proposed converter. All the control strategies are simulated in PSIM software. The simulated and experimental results verify the analysis. Finally, a 1kW prototype is build and the design methods of hardware circuit and software program are presented. The experimental results based on this prototype verify the analysis.
