Power grid faults can generate traveling wave signals at the fault point. The signals transmit to both ends of the faulted transmission line at the speed of electromagnetic wave, and propagate further into the whole grid. The traveling wave singals can thus be detected in every power station. The traveling wave base fault locator records the traveling wave arrival times in every substation, then accurately calculates the fault positions. The power grid fault location with traveling wave is an important research topic in the world. The traveling wave location network, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) communication and fault location software are discussed in the thesis.GPRS is one of the best wireless communication technologies for fault location networks. The characteristics of GPRS are introduced, and the communication requirements and topologies for fault location network are analyzed firstly in the thesis. The data acquisition device (DAD) for traveling wave is developed with traveling wave sensor, signal processing module, high-precision clock and GPRS module. The selection and setting for GPRS module are discussed in detail. Considered the fault location algorithm, the DADs configuration is presented. And The GPRS based fault location network in Hunan Zhuzhou power grid is designed with nine DADs.Browser/Server based fault location software is designed with .NET language. The data communication between data acquisition device (DAD) and fault location server is implemented with a widget named Winsock. In SQL Server 2000 platform, database involving abundant fault location network data and grid fault data is constructed. The fault location information can be viewed in internet anywhere. A fault location algorithm without the influence of wave speed and fault arcing is presented. It can identify the difference of reflect traveling-waves coming from fault point and the other substation. The traveling wave based location network for Zhuzhou Power Grid is developed. Testing results show that the network is with high precision and robustness, and the fault locator error is no more than 300m.
