Optimized matching of exhaust gas turbocharger with the diesel engine is the key for the engine to maximize its efficiency under given working mode without being interrupted. On 16V240ZJD engine are installed VTC254 turbochargers from ABB. And Jiangjin Turbocharger Plant has purchased production license from ABB and some other research institutes have been working on the modular design and have designed/produced certain products of different levels. These joint efforts have completely outdated the old turbochargers. The article is stressed on a comprehensive introduction of the principle and features of VTC254-D turbocharger and the specifications and test methods of the turbochargers that are used on rail power unit-diesel engine and carried out a statistical analysis on the performance/test parameters of the turbocharger, which provides practical test data from theoretical analysis for further improving the matching efficiency of the turbocharger with the diesel engine. As seen from the matching test of VTC254-D turbocharger and 16V240ZJD diesel engine and thermal analysis, by selecting finely matched turbocharger flow elements and by drawing engine traction characteristic curve, curves of fuel consumption, fuel consumption, exhaust temperature, turbocharger speed, inlet/exhaust pressure with the traction characteristics and curves of optimized/matched blower characteristics and engine running curves based on the test, the engine is guaranteed to run normally in given mode having its service power maximized.Engine thermal performance is effectively improved by optimizing engine turbocharging system matching, which is reflected on the improvement of performance parameters, decrease of thermal load, saving of energy, reduction of hazardous emission, etc.
