Water damage of asphalt pavements due to insufficient moisture susceptibility is not only one of the major types of early destructon but also one of the major obstacles to applying domestic heavy duty road asphalt to freeway. Therefor, through many tests and theoretical analysis, the paper roundly studies the moisture susceptibility and the factors which affecting it., on the basis of which, the physicochemical characterization of asphalt-aggregate interactions under the influence of water is deeply researched for grasping the mechanism of moisture susceptibility. The main contents include evaluating the moisture susceptibility of domestic heavy duty road asphalt, studying the change rule of moisture susceptibility when mineral aggregate, aggregate gradation, air voids and asphalt ingredients vary in hot mixed asphalt(HMA), exploring the physicochemical characterization of asphalt-aggregate interactions under the influence of freeze-thaw cycles, researching the effectiveness and mechanism of anti-stripping agents(lime) in improving the moisture susceptibility of HMA, analyzing how the outer factors including nature environment, automobile load, water pressure caused by wheel affect the ability of HMA to resist moisture damage, studying the high-temperature stability of HMA.The results of this paper provide important scientific theory and practice for the design and construction of asphalt pavement that can well resist to water damage and point out the direction for the applying domestic heavy duty road asphalt to freeway in some degree.
