The driving simulator is a computer-controlled tool to study the interface between driver and vehicle response under simulated traffic conditions. It permits a controllable, reproducible and cost-effective study of vehicle parameters up to the limits of active safety under non-dangerous conditions. Simulators have been in use for many years for training, design applications, and human-factors research. Recent advances in computing power, computer graphics, and virtual reality systems are leading to important new opportunities for the development and use of driving simulators.The Driving Simulator provides a realistic simulation environment which makes the driver has the driving feeling as the real road. Sound Simulation System is one of the most important components in the Driving Simulator. In this thesis a new generation of Sound Simulation System of engine vibration, wind noise and tyre vibration noise was developed to increase the immersion of the Driving Simulator and interactivity between of the simulator and the driver.It was shown that the Sound Simulation System has a significant influence on the whole Driving Simulator during the past 10 years of testing in the ASCL laboratory. But there was only a simple Sound Simulation System developed in 1998, in which only the influence of the engine vibration was included because of the limitation of the computing and testing.It is proposed to add the influence of wind noise and tyre vibration into this simple Sound Simulation System. Firstly, the mechanism of wind noise and tyre vibration noise was studied. Then, a list of testing and data processing was constructed based on the known mechanism of wind and tyre noise. Finally the testing data of noise could be broadcast simultaneously using the software program which was verified in the time and fidelity.The main work and results in this thesis are followed:(1) study the sound systems of abroad world-class level driving simulator, identified the basis of the advanced sound system of ADSL driving smulator;(2) based on the mechanism of car inner noise, established the way to acquire wind noise and tyre vibration; the data file of noise was achieved by data processing of filtering; (3) according to wind noise and tire noise characteristics, established the Lagrange two-dimensional interpolation algorithm, produce inexistent interpolated sample, and carried on the spectral analysis to the production sample, discovered it conforms to the theory principle; after listened it, its quite close real sounds;(4) on the foundation of the simulator original hardware constructs, in order to construct the 3D sound simulation system, carried on the discussion of the hardware equipment and the scheme of arrangement of the advanced sound system of ADSL driving simulator.
