Over the past 50 years, the research on line protection has been greatly improved, its designing and manufacturing has been raised to a high lever. However, the progress on element protection has not been so much, its theory,operation and management have a vast gap as compared to line protection. With the hydro-generator of Three Gorges Project being put into operation and many large and huge hydro-generator stations being constructed, the unit capacity of hydro-generator trends to become larger. Theses huge generators are key equipment, which play important roles in the safety and stability of the stations, even for the whole electric power grid. Therefore, in order to improve the element protection technology, it is attractive to study on how to choose a proper relay configuration and a right setting value for these large equipments.Firstly, the principle of the generator protection and transformer protection has been researched, and the development trend of the element protection has been predicted under the new situation. In the analysis of the transformer protection, the relay setting of some related protection on the Guide of Calculating Settings of Relay Protection for Large Generator and Transformer has been discussed.Secondly, the tipical configuration chart of the large generator and transformer protection has been studied. The analysis is respect to the RCS-985 protection device, made by NARI-RELAYS ELECTRIC CO. LTD, for generators with capacity of 300MW and 125MW. The principle,the optimum design of main protection configuration scheme for large generators and some related questions have been discussed. Some conclusions have been achieved.In addition, the software of relay protection setting calculation for generator and transformer has been developed. In order to maximize the autonomous rights of the users, the model of the device requisition,the setting rules,the notes format of the setting process can be defined by their own. The setting values can be adjusted by handwork. The software solves the problem of generality and scalability, so it can meet the requirement of the engineering practical situation.At last, in order to display the whole process, the setting calculation of the protection device(RCS-985R)for the 1# generator in Qinbei station in Henan province has been taken as an example. The accuracy and the economic advantage of the software has been proved by this example.
