Based on the collection of related theory and practice background of sustainability appraisal, this paper focuses on exploring its technique methods applying on the level of urban space strategy. Still, it tries to seek a way on the following aspects:a) Discuss upon the relationship between Sustainability Appraisal and Urban Planning. It's kind of way to lay on continuous"deviation rectifying"to the blue print as to the planning workout procedure. While due to"rectify a deviation", the possible effects on the sustainability of future city produced by resource redistribution and regulation of social, economic and environment behavior, could through debasing or eliminating planning's default or its'substantial results prevent or control them to emerge. Meanwhile, this can also be delivered by independent sustainability appraisal in every arrangement of planning workout.b) Outline the development skeleton and theory background of SA. SA is not an isolated developed technique, besides it is an integrated system which experienced 3 general evolutions. Now widely institutionalized, the EIA process has broadened progressively in scope and Inclusiveness and toward a framework for integration that continues to evolve.'First generation'(project-level) EIA now considers a range of effects including social, health, economic and other aspects. Perhaps the most striking trend of the last decade is the development and adoption of a'second generation'process of SEA for policy, plan and programmed proposals.c) Discuss the contents, process and technical methods on the urban space strategy. After defining of the SA in urban planning field, this article analyzed its related planning administration level and stressed itself on the SA of urban space development strategy. Meanwhile, it particularly expatiated the inter-active way of appraisal process and planning workout. The prognosticate SA constituted by the following core steps: background investigation, analysis and appraisal; sustainability objects appraisal; the scope of sustainability contents; policy appraisal; strategy compatibility; the indexes; administration and appraisal; relation with other policy and projects; record and report the appraisal results.d) Demonstration research on the practice case. As a programmatic SA, it aimed at seeking of contents, working process and appraisal methods on the SA of urban development strategy. To gain this, the research was applying the abstracted rudimental structure.
