With the fast development of our country's economy, the more and more electric power will be needed. So there will be more and more transmission towers used in many kinds of construction of transmission lines, and the more and more steels will be consumed. So the structural optimization of this kind of transmission tower is fairly significant in decrease of steel wastage and improvement of design level.In this paper, optimizing design of transmission tower was studied, based on the theory of finite element and optimization, as well as the own traits of this structure. Stiffness matrix of 3D-truss analysis was developed using FORTRAN computer language, and the software in finite element of ANSYS was used to validate the exactness of this program. And based on the consideration of the efficiency of optimization for large-scale structures, the difference quotient method was improved. Based on the standard of design and traits of this structure, the mathematic model of optimization design for transmission towers was founded and the program of optimization design basing on the theory of the improved difference quotient method was developed by FORTRAN. And with the program of data-processing, the whole applications software of optimization designs for transmission towers was formed and its applicability, veracity and progress were validated through computation examples.
