With the coming of the twelfth Five-year plan, our social and economic will continue to usher in a rapid, sustained and comprehensive development stage. Power industry has always been an important pillar industry of national economic development, and the construction of transmission lines is an important part of electric power construction. In order to save materials and reduce construction costs, the optimum design of transmission tower structure was concerned by many research institutions and scholars in recent years.At present, transmission tower optimization design was achieved mainly through optimization design experience summary, experimental data and theoretical analysis of a combination method at home and abroad. People have done a lot of related work and made a lot of achievements for optimum design of transmission tower, they have strong theoretical guidance. But the use of optimization methods are fairly, especially in large high-voltage transmission tower structure, the operation is not very convenient.In terms of transmission tower structural design load, this paper accordance with the< Load code for the design of building structures> (GB 50011-2001) and <Code for designing of 110~750 kV overhead transmission line>(GB 50545-2010) strictly, gives the calculation method of the relevant tower load, and makes load condition combination according to the structural normal operation, accidents break, installation conditions and uneven cladding ice load condition, makes the transmission tower design load calculation program in the language of Matlab.This paper also introduces the finite element analysis method of transmission tower space truss structure, at the same time the structure finite element analysis program was prepared in the language of Matlab, calculate the internal force and displacement of the structure above the load conditions. By compared with the analysis result of Ansys about a transmission tower structure, the analysis program prepared in this paper is correct.Finally, based on the thought of traditional full-stress design and full-displacement design, a new method—two-dimensional direct searching method of discrete variables, which is suitable for large high-voltage transmission tower structure optimization design was putted forward in this paper. The paper also established section size optimization mathematical model of transmission tower structure, and prepared the optimization design program. By using the program to one tower structure for optimization design, the program was proved to be feasibility and efficiency. On this basis, the paper made the size optimization design for a 220-7812 type transmission tower structure by using the two-dimensional direct searching method of discrete variables, and compared with the original scheme in order to get ideal optimized result. Aims to make the weight of structure lightest, reduce steel quantity and the project cost of transmission tower structure in meet the rods strength constraint, stability constraints, stiffness constraints, and structure displacement conditions. On this basis, some different design schemes of tower were made by changing the slope of the root and the root opening of tower, impact analysis of transmission tower optimal design in different root opening was also made in this paper, which considering the factors of tower weight and foundation force etc.
