The Design And Functions Of City Square Landscape

Square is a place which mainly manifests the cultural contents and landscape of a city. And the designing of square is an important part of the designing of a city. The purpose of studying square design and its functions are: to highlight the characteristics of the city, improve the image of the city, make good use of the city's space, and to provide a good outdoor place for the citizens.I'v read lots of books, foreign and Chinese, on square design, square landscape and square's function, and found that western people have long before attached importance to square, and it is a little earlier than Chinese people. In modern world, as the construction's form and style change, square design also changes on form, style, and function. In recent years, square design has also been more and more accounted for. At present, there have been some research and discussions on the theory and specific techniques of square design, but these kinds of discussions are few, and their points of view are relatively simplex. Now, the. level of western research culture of city's square is higher than that of Chinese. Since the western design culture of city's square has always been a part of western architecture culture and art, its level reached a very high height in ancient times. But western theoretical discussions on city's square design are based on the characteristics of western city, we can learn from them, but we should not copy them. I think that a successfully designed square should be like the following: its location should be properly chosen, it should have many kinds of functions, it should meet the citizens' needs , its overall arrangement should be rational, its size should be proper, its scale should be suitable for people, and it also should have the cultural content which has the local cultural characteristics and era's characteristics. Thus, city's square design in China should be carried out according to Chinese native environment and Chinese native culture. This thesis' focus is on how to successfully construct city's square in China, based on real specific examples, this thesis firstly discusses square's status and function in a city, then it categorizes the types,space forms and Extensity closed of city's squares, then long length has been devoted to discussions on various aspects of in square landscape design: the principles,methods,and procedures of square landscape design; design techniques of each item in square landscape design; and the problems that need to be taken notice and need to be solved in square landscape design, then in this thesis , some analysis and research is done on how to manifest the city's cultural characteristics in square landscape design, how to improve the quality level of the city's landscape. Based on the above analysis and research, I bring forward some possible trends of future's square design, and also do some further research into the theory and techniques of Chinese city's square design, and the research has a certain degree of theoretical and practical significances.
