With the rapid development of railway transportation toward high speed and heavy haul, rolling contact wear of rail has being become more and more severe and has an important influence on the safety of train running and railway transportation cost. So it has very important economic significance and guiding role for alleviating and preventing the wear of rail by investigating the rolling wear behavior of rail.Abundant experiment of rolling contact wear of rail has been carried on using a JD-1 wheel/rail simulation facility. The effects of axle load and curve radius on rolling wear behavior of rail have been focused on particularly through changing test parameters. Furthermore, the effects of axle load, curve radius and friction coefficient on friction work of wheel-rail have been investigated using CONTACT programme. Through combining experimental and calculational results, preliminary empirical formula between the wear volume of rail sample and friction work is given. This study has some reference value toward studying rolling contact wear of rail in laboratory. Main conclusions are drawn as follows:1. Axle load is an important influencing factor of the rolling wear of rail. There is a proportional relation between friction work on the contact patch of wheel/rail, wear volume of rail sample and axle load.2. Curve radius plays a key role in rolling wear process of rail. Friction work on the contact patch of wheel/rail is inversely proportional to curve radius. Correspondingly, the wear volume of rail sample is inversely proportional to curve radius. When the curve radius is less than 600m, the increasing range of friction work is increased evidently and the wear of rail increases rapidly.3. Friction coefficient is an important factor of rolling wear of rail. Increasing friction coefficient would result in rapid increase in friction work. So, when there is enough adhesive force on contact patch of wheel/rail for normal operation of rolling stock, the friction coefficient of rail surface shoud be decreased as possible.4. The empirical formula of simulated wear volume of rail sample using friction work is been given. It can verify experimental results and replace some simulation experiment study on rail steels in a certain extent in laboratory.
