The study on vessel collision avoidance in restricted visibility is an issue which is concerned about by navigators. Therefore, based on the summary and analysis on researches done before, this thesis conducts a systemic study on vessel collision avoidance not in sight of one another in restricted visibility, especially conducts a complete and in-depth study on vessel collision avoidance principle, obtains some production. The main research work includes several parts, which will be represented as following:(1) By studying the data and literature on vessel collision or collision avoidance in restricted visibility, the thesis explains the significance of the study on vessel collision avoidance not in sight of one another in restricted visibility.(2) Analyze and study on the signification of restricted visibility, analyze quantitatively restricted visibility, analyze forming factors and judging means of restricted visibility. Analyze the signification of risk collision, put forward judging means of risk of ship collision in restricted visibility.(3) Study on the responsibilities and duties of vessels not in sight of one another, In accord with international regulations for preventing collision at sea and good seamanship, study quantitatively on the time and range that the action should be taken.(4) In accord with international regulations for preventing collision at sea 19(d), study on collision avoidance principle of a vessel which detects by radar alone the presence of another vessel, analyze in quadrant the means of altering course, altering speed and altering course and speed, validate that through plotting radar relatively movement.(5) In accord with international regulations for preventing collision at sea 19(e), study on collision avoidance principle of every vessel which hears apparently forward of her beam fog signal of another vessel or which cannot avoid a close-quarters situation with another vessel forward of her beam, analyze the instance of vessels with operational radars and not with them.(6) In accord with international regulations for preventing collision at sea, 1978 STCW treaty made by IMO and the precaution which may be required by the ordinary practice of seaman, study on the relative regulation which should be followed and ready-made preparative work by vessels in restricted visibility.
