The electric propulsion is a mechanical system using electromotor as prime mover, through proper control on motor, to enable the adjustment on the start, stop, speed and position of machine, and to fulfill the requirements of varies manufacture processes. With the development of electrical power electronic technique and control technology etc, the permanent magnet synchronous motor drive system (PMSM) has now become the research focus of the electric propulsion technologists from all over the world, and the requirements on its reliability and fault-tolerant capability in application subsequently is becoming higher and higher. Therefore it is significantly valuable to research and develop an PMSM electric propulsion system with a high reliability and fault-tolerant capability.The electrical propulsion system proposed in this article utilizes the advantages of PMSM such as small volume, light weight, small moment of inertia and high effectiveness of operation, high reliability, against the DC electric propulsion system's defectiveness on structure and asynchronous electric propulsion system's power defectiveness and inefficiency.From a hardware level, by implement fault-tolerant design on PMSM and inveter; adopting digital signal processor dsPIC30F4011 which has high precision, reliability and stability; and using IR2121 & IR2125 drive chipset which has error protection & inspection features, the proposed system is designed to have an improved fault-tolerant capability and security level.From a software level, by adopting the Hysteresis-band Current Tracking Control algorithm and proposing two error-remedy methods, the proposed system is enabled to maintain operation and keep the stability of torque output even with errors, which could be expected to reduce the injury/death of people, the damage to the community as well as economy losses. These methods moreover are proved practical and with good performance by Matlab simulation and experimentation.The PMSM electric propulsion system designed in this article which is based on fault-tolerant control technology, could be implemented in those circumstances with high security, stability and reliability requirements such as vessel's electric propulsion system, aircraft's electric drive system and petrol industry.
