In present Chinese cities, the forms of most pedestrian spaces in commercial streets are linear. The public activities happened there vary from each other according to the forms and functions of their spaces. The present thesis uses the concept of pausibility to explore the correspondence between pedestrian spaces and stationary activities in commercial streets. To concrete the study, North Sichuan Road in Shanghai is surveyed as an actual case. This thesis is not only the result of the efforts devoted to summarizing the type of stationary activities in the street, but also to understanding the relationship between a specific space-North Sichuan Rd. and its stationary activities. Furthermore, it may support to draft plans and policies for pedestrian spaces with good quality in commercial streets.Firstly this thesis summarize the whole historical background, exist problems and theories of pausiblity-related studies of pedestrian spaces in commercial streets. The purpose is to build up a complex multidisciplinary perspective for this thesis as an analyzing basis. Secondly based on theoretical and practical studies, this thesis builds up a content frame for pausibility study on pedestrian spaces, including elements of spaces and stationary activities. Finally it makes a deep on-site quantitative research on a section of pedestrian spaces in North Sichuan Road. The research is about the features of space elements and corresponding stationary activities. After some comparative analysis it draws on some conclusions about their mutual influences.
