Recently, with the widely use of energy dissipation technology, many countries have made relevant technical codes for the design and construction of energy dissipation structures. Based on the research work at home and abroad nowadays, the Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings adds the rules for the design of energy dissipation system. But, the rules, which are difficult to be accepted by the structural engineers and to be carried out in the real project, are principled. So, a brief design method, and some guide rules for the design of energy dissipation construction are presented in this paper. The main contents are as follows:Firstly, the recent development and application of the energy dissipation devices and their mechanical model are introduced in this paper. Then, the usual design methods of energy dissipation system at home and abroad are introduced in this paper, and the advantages and disadvantages of different methods are compared briefly.Accordingly, a modified design method based on seismic performance levels and earthquake demand idea is presented. This method, which is based on story model, can be manipulated easily and can take both accuracy and efficiency into consideration. The nonlinear time history analysis can be effectively made based on the model after main structure turned into elastoplastic phase.Eventually, a steel frame structure equipped with two different energy dissipation equipments is designed with the performance method optimizing, capacity-spectrum method and the simplified method presented in this paper. Then the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods are summarized through the result, and the operability of the brief method presented in this paper is demonstrated. Finally, some valuable conclusions are summarized, and some suggestions for the design of energy dissipation system are presented.
