With the development of road construction in China since reform and opening, the share of road investment in the infrastructure has been increasing, so quality of the road should be ensured to improve the investment benefit. As we known, old method of project inspection, such as core drilling, turns low- efficiency, weak- representative and damaging. NDT (non-destructive test) for the road inspection is in need because of its speediness, simpleness and high- efficiency.GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) can meet the above demand of road inspection as a way of non-destructive technology. GPR technology belongs to geophysical method, the introducing into road inspection begins in the late 1980s in Europe and America. When in the 1990s, that has been researched in China. Nowadays, many institutions and colleges have been exploited the field of GPR.Currently, Shanghai Municipal Engineering Administration Department induced a GPR equipment, which was produced for road inspection by Penetradar corporation in America. However, the GPR equipment has not been used extensively in the road field. So, this paper aims to research all kinds of applications in the road engineering by the existent GPR equipment, based on demand of pavement management.Firstly, the paper tells the development and the application of GPR technology in some engineering fields in China and abroad. And also, the paper shows the parts of the equipment, illustrates the wok principle for inspecting road, and induces the performance indexs and parameters. The main contents of this paper show as follows: the research in the recognition of the wave map from GPR, the research in the inspection of depth of road layers and the research in the inspection of structural scarcity between the layers of the road. At last, it is suggested that modem NDT system should be established and estimated. And farther research about GPR in the road field is expected.
