In recent years, with the rapid development of large-span space structures, researchers know shell structures more deeply than ever before. So it is paid wide attention for shell-structures dynamic failure mode and damage mechanism. As the important basic forms of the single-layer roofs, the single-layer saddle-shaped reticular roofs have been widely applied in actual frame, for their light-weight, beautiful shape, and convenient construction. In this paper, by the FEM program ANSYS, a full course method based on time-history analysis is adopted to research the single layer saddle-shaped reticular shell comprehensively, through changing the parameter such as the span, height-span ratio and the roof surface loading. With the self-edited pre-processing and post-processing program, the response patterns of the structure under different directions, different frequencies harmonic loading are summarized. On this basis, the same thing has been further carried out subjected to earthquake waves from different directions. Based on several response indicators such as the maximum node displacement, total strain energy and the percentage of the yielded bars, both characteristics and mechanism of damage are analyzed and summarized. Some useful recommendations of the practical engineering are given in this paper.
