With "Digital Earth", "Digital China", "Digital City" concepts are putted forward and the rapid development of modern spatial information technology, the geotechnical engineering three-dimensional modeling and visualization has become the forefront of geological study. Developing urban three dimensional geotechnical engineering information system and researching on geology and geotechnical project modeling, visualization and spatial analysis, numerical simulation applications, are not only be of great theoretical significance, but also for achieving geotechnical engineering scientific management, evaluating the risk of design and construction planning, and improving intelligent decision-making level, is of important value.This paper summarizes research and application status of the geotechnical engineering informationization home and aboard, and analyses three dimensional geotechnical engineering information system's requirement according to data management, modeling services, scientific visualization and professional application. On this basis, the architecture, data flow and user interface is summarily designed. Secondly, some key technologies and hot spots, such as 3D GIS data model, the complex geological modeling, geotechnical engineering object modeling, scientific visualization and spatial analysis, three dimensional numerical simulation application integration are discussed. Geotechnical engineering modeling method is one of main contents in this paper. According to its characteristics, four basic methods, including parameters modeling, irregular modeling, CSG modeling, rapid prototype based modeling are prompted. And a variety of ways are derived to meet the needs for complex modeling.Three dimensional model apply to geotechnical engineering numerical simulation analysis is a trend nowadays. Based on the way to achieve loosely integration with FLAC3D software, it makes up the defects of numerical simulation software in building complex model, and greatly simplifies the preprocessing of numerical simulation.In this paper, the 3D-Geotech, which is a urban three dimensional geotechnical engineering information system, is realized and applied into Beijing city's geotechnical engineering projects successfully. In the end, the future direction of further research is summed up.
