Nonlinear analysis has become an important part of structural seismic design, among which the nonlinear static push-over analysis has attracted the attention of more and more engineers for its merits of simpleness and practicality. The nonlinear static analysis has become one of nonlinear analysis tools of Chinese seismic code. This paper introduced the theory of nonlinear push-over analysis and the method that ETABS carries on it, then studied the development of frame structural seismic design, generalized the procedure of capacity-based seismic design, summarized the structural seismic performance of frame structure. Finally, this paper used ETABS application to analyze three frame buildings.According to the plastic hinge distribution which was obtained from the nonlinear push-over analysis, this paper tested whether the building satisfied the"stronger column weaker beam". According to the base shear-top displacement curve and the structural performance point, calculated the story displacement and drifts which were compared with the code value and then tested whether the building satisfied the three standard seismic demands. Finally, this paper studied the structural seismic dynamic property deeply, discussed the way to improve performance of the planned building and reinforce the existing building. The new idea of this paper is to describe the state of structural member under different level seismic using nonlinear push-over analysis and documents, to help engineers find the ways of improving structural seismic capacity. Macroscopic analysis cannot do this.
