This paper researched and analyzed the general assembly modeling process and variant design process, then detected some insufficiency. In the assembly modeling process, for solving the conflict which would be emergened by the bottom-up style of assembly modeling, the flexible assembly modeling idea was brought forward. The idea could solve the question of assembly conflict well and realize the flexible assembly process with two methods. This two methods can be performed whenever the parts were assembling or after assembling, the methods could accomplish well in the both course. Because it was hard for designer to associate variant connection among parts in assembly model which was made from a large number of parts, so an adaptive variant design idea was brought forward. The adaptive variant design idea could solve the question well and reduce the artificial participation and improve efficiency. The adaptive variant design idea contained three methods which were the skeleton-based adaptive variant design method, assembly connection-based adaptive variant design method and parameter association-based variant design method. Final, the adaptive variant design system (AVDS) was developed, and carried out it aimed at the frame assembly of rapier loom. Main contents including:Chapter I the research status of variant design and assembly modeling were introduced, and the research background, research content, research intention and organization frame of this thesis were introduced too.Chapter II researched and analyzed the general assembly modeling process and variant design process, then detected some insufficiency. The flexible assembly modeling method and adaptive variant design method were brought forward aimed at those insufficiency. And simply introduced those two methods.Chapter III analyzed and compared bottom-up and top-down modeling styles. Introduced the styles of assembly conflicts and confirmed the mainly conflicts concerned. And introduced the content and performance process of flexible assembly modeling method closely.Chapter IV introduced the content and process of adaptive variant design idea closely. Then introduced the three methods closely which were the skeleton-based adaptive variant design method, assembly connection-based adaptive variant design method and parameter association-based variant design method that adaptive variant design idea includeing.Chapter V introduced the requirement of founding AVDS system. Introduced the mainly frame work of AVDS system and the mainly function module, and introduce the lower function module closely.Chapter VI took the frame assembly of rapier loom for example, expressed the flexible assembly modeling process and adaptive variant design process closely. Chapter VII summarized the whole thesis and looks ahead into further research and development.
