MTR (Mass Transit Rail) is one of the most effective ways to solve traffic problems in large cities. The dominating content of harmonies traffic is the construction of traffic available, functional abundant, resource economic and environment friendly MTR hubs. However, the design and appraisal of such hubs were based on static and experience method traditionally. It has lots of pitfalls in engineering and theory, such as lack of design criteria, disability in evaluating LOS (Level of Service) of the station. In order to answer these questions, this paper develops the passenger flow model for different types of passenger facilities in MTR and investigates the LOS for passenger facilities. The study result can be used as a basis for the design and development of passenger facilities in MTR.Firstly, this paper reviews the pedestrian flow theory and the basic method to study the characteristic of pedestrian flow and LOS of pedestrian facilities.Secondly, passenger surveys were conducted to study characteristic of MTR and passenger traffic characteristic at both macroscopic and microscopic level. Passenger microscopic behavior in MTR environment has been concluded and its impact to passenger speed is studied.Passenger flow models for walkway, upward stairway and downward stairway which illustrate passenger speed/density relationships have been built using statistical method based on the collected data at different types of passenger facilities in MTR. The passenger flow models are compared with previous research findings. It shows passenger flow presents specific traffic characteristic in MTR environment. At Last, the passenger preference interview was conducted. Space requirement was gleaned from the observation of passenger preference and behavior. On the basis of the survey result, LOS for passenger facilities in MTR is proposed. The LOS proposed standards are compared with previous research findings, and the similarities and differences are analyzed.
