A Study Of Monolayer Factory Building Renovation In Creative Industry Center Of Shanghai

Shanghai, as the birthplace of China's modern industry in 1920s and 1930s and the industry construction center at the early liberation, now still has a large amount of unused or abandoned factories among which are many monolayer factory buildings. These monolayer factory buildings become Shanghai's valuable resource for industry buildings'renovation due to its plenty space, succinct structure, widely adapted, and easily rebuilt features.How to renovate these monolayer factory buildings to reuse these old buildings to satisfy the requirements of the rising Shanghai's creative industry center while still keeps the history of Shanghai's old industry culture is an interesting topic. This dissertation studies the feasibility of monolayer factory buildings'renovations. It analyses and summarizes the existing experiences for monolayer factory buildings'renovations, and points out the problems encountered in the current practical industry and research. This thesis also proposes some special renovation approaches considering the current conditions and the economical, cultural, and climate conditions in Shanghai.This dissertation focuses on the studies of monolayer factory buildings'renovations in Shanghai's creative industry center. It investigates many aspects in the monolayer factory buildings'renovations, such as the value of the culture, the space facts, the technology mechanism, and etc. Previously, such renovation for the creative industry center from the old industry buildings is conducted by a small number of artists and designers individually or occasionally. However, now the government is involved and purposely develops the creative center such that the number and the scale of such center become larger, which makes the investigation of monolayer factory buildings'renovations much more important. Additionally, to be a city as the international economic and cultural center, Shanghai sets up a better environment for the developing of creative industry center. The space model and design mechanism used in Shanghai's creative industry center will lead the developing of creative industry in other areas, and the approaches for monolayer factory buildings'renovation in Shanghai's creative industry center will have a far-reaching impact on the renovation of the similar buildings in the whole country.
