In order to solve the problem of harmonic and reactive power compensation caused by reversible cold roll mill, this paper analyzes the trend in the world about the studies for the problems, recommends a synthetic scheme of high & low voltage filters and reactive power compensation installation for the status which harmonic currents are larger, power factor is lower and the variety of reactive power flux is larger while reversible cold roll mill is running. In this scheme, a control system is used for switching of high-voltage filters (by vacuum contactors or vacuum breakers) and low-voltage (by SCR) at the same time.By field running and testing, this installation can reduce a great deal of harmonic currents which inject into electrical power system, achieve the harmonic voltages and currents meeting the limiting criterion of GB/T 14593. The power factor can be more then 0.95. The over or under compensation can both avoid. It is proved by practice that this installation is able to save energy and get a lower cost, and may be applicable for most medium and small plants.
