As the development of power electronic technology, a large number of rectifying equipments are applied in users’production equipment, especially in iron and steel enterprises. Over the years, production scale was expanded, and equipments such as arc furnace with large capacity and the variable frequency rolling mill came into production of the iron and steel enterprises successively. As the increase of impact load, the power quality of enterprises’ power supply system was seriously influenced. It not only caused the shortage of reactive power and the decrease of voltage and power factor, but also induced a large number of higher harmonics in the system. The shortage of reactive power in the grid can induce the increase of voltage loss and the decrease of equipment utilization. The harmonics may increase the wastage of equipment and aggravate the thermal stress. They may also increase the voltage peak and the insulation stress, and eventually cause insulation breakdown. Meanwhile, the harmonic will disturb the power system and cause its distortion. Then the normal operation of equipment and load will be influenced.In this paper the reactive compensation devices of the power system for the project of cold rolling mill of Tonghua Iron&Steel Co., Ltd. are designed. Based on practical situation of Tonghua Iron&Steel Co., Ltd., after the analysis and the comparation of present reactive compensation devices and the compensating methods, the SVC compensation device of model TCR+FC which are widely applied, is designed. Based on summary and calculation of the large volumes of raw data in real project, the main parameters of SVC compensation device are obtained. These main parameters are verified in theory. The reasonability of results on the design is verified in the practical production. The SVC compensation devices which have fast response speed and high performance cost ratio are important to the improvement on the power quality of power supply system of Tonghua Iron&Steel Co., Ltd..
