The reactive power optimization of a radial distribution system can efficiently minimize the real power losses and improve voltage level of it, so that the yearly running charge will be reduced and the quality of power energy can be increased. Power flow method of a distribution system is the base and tool of reactive power optimization, whose convergence and computation speed is very important to the efficiency of optimization. The programs of power flow calculation and network loss calculation are developed. The established mathematical model which suitable for realistic situation of distribution network is the key to slove the reactive power optimization. This paper present the comprehensive objective function considering network energy loss ,node voltage level and investment of reactive compensation equipment. Penalty function is considered to deal with variables violating the constraints. Based on three different load operation conditions-light, normal and heavy, the program of reactive power optimization based on the Improved Ant Colony Optimization Algorithm is developed. The real tests prove the practicability and validity of this paper method. The real tests prove the practicability and validity of this paper method.
