A Study On The Form And Aesthetics Of Little Garden-Bridge And Its Landscape Significance

The bridge is a kind of architecture which is a structure carrying a pathway or roadway over a river or gorge. If a bridge, which has a good visual effect and aesthetic value, can arouse the people esthetic sense, and be integrated itself into the site environment in perfect harmony, we call it garden-bridge.Based on the historical researches on little garden-bridges, and combining methods of aesthetics and spatial structure, the dissertation analyses and summarizes the spatial forms of little garden-bridges at aesthetics aspect. And, we expand the research methods to the environment around the bridge so as to richly enrich the route scenery of the landscape sequence. Some facilities attached to the bridges such as the handrails, the couplets and so on, are also discussed. By contrasting the features of bridges across different periods, the dissertation combines the ancient garden-bridges with modern ones into an integrated system. At last, based on the predecessor achievements, the dissertation, combining with my design practice, further analyzes the contemporary design situation of little garden-bridge and its landscape significance.The dissertation contains horizontally the subjects as Landscape Architecture, Bridge Architecture and Aesthetics, and, vertically, the development of different forms of little garden-bridges. Although many subjects involved, the paper states strictly around the form and aesthetics.
