With the development of intelligent material science, being a new material, Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) has a good application prospect in structure engineering because of unique and excellent character. Hence, the study on the structural vibration control with these SMA dampers, especially on historic building vibration control has considerable value.This thesis presents a study and analysis of SMA damper and its application for earthquake resistant and strengthening of the ancient tower through theory analysis, and computer simulation, referring to the study and application of SMA in structure vibration control. The key developments and creative achievements are contained in this dissertation as follows:(1) The writer designs a tensioned SMA damper, sets up its theoretical model and tests it according to the constitutional relationship of SMA.(2) The structure and the status quo of the Guang Tower are introduced. Its earthquake resistant performance is tested on the spot. Dynamic response of uncontrolled structure under earthquake is done finite element analysis.(3) Uncontrolled structure and controlled structure with SMA dampers under big and small earthquake of EL Centro wave, Taft wave and field wave are done finite element analysis. The relative movement between the small tower top and the main tower top and the acceleration of the small tower top of uncontrolled structure and controlled structure are analysed. The effect of SMA dampers is reviewed. The results show that this damper can reduce the earthquake response of the Guang Tower effectively.(4) The mathematical models are established. The objective function is obtained. Under some constraint conditions, the variable is solved. The variable makes the objective function become extremely small or big. In the optimized goal, the structure is done optimal design through changing the number or the arrangement of the SMA dampers. Also combined with finite element analysis, the optimal design is obtained.
