The main subject investigated in this paper is rammed earth wall (REW) of rural house in Yun-nan province. Research about seismic performance of REW played an important role in the "Earthquake Safety Project" of Yun-nan Province . Earthquake occurs frequently in our country, especially in village, it is significant to carry on the studies about the seismic performance of rural house.Firstly, by investigation on the spot, the actuality of present rammed earth wall-wood frame structure and the situation of has been realized strengthening to rural house. Contemporarily, some good measures are detected, shortages and blemishes are also emerged. This paper emphases on the present status of REW, and reasons of its damages are analyzed.Secondly, seismic disasters in Ning-er' 6.03 earthquake are investigated and studied, by means of analysis of destructive, some corresponding proposals are proposed.Thirdly, two kinds of typical soil are selected, parameters such as respective shear strength, grading curve, optimum moisture content, maximum dry density, liquid limit, plastic limit, and shrink limit are obtained through series of experiments. According to these fruits of experiments, proposals and measures are proposed used to construct and maintain of REW.Finally, using two kind of different soil to construct wall which will used to experiments, after suitable maintenance, walls are tested withstanding a horizontal force in single direction, then the bearing capacity, force-displacement relation and failure shape are obtained. Combining the results of soil tests, wall's failure model is analyzed, primary factors influenced bearing capacity of tradition REW are determined preliminary, formula which is used to estimate bearing capacity of walls is calculated considering to bamboo strips. Proposals and construction measures are proposed in order to improve earthquake resistance ability of REW.Due to various aspects of restriction, many works in this paper need to be researched more profoundly.
