High voltage transmission line of Electric power system can easily get into trouble because of the long transmitting distance, the complexity of geology or meteorology and many other causes. 90% to 95% of the failures are instantaneous ones, such as insulator arc-over and so on. In such failures, it is very difficult to locate the fault position for that the hurt isn't obvious enough. Fault location techniques are used to pinpoint location of the fault on a transmission line. Transmission line faults must be located accurately to allow maintenance crew to arrive at the scene and repair the faulted section as soon as possible, which can relief the burdens of patrol personnel and reduce the revenue losses due to power outage. The accurate fault location algorithms play an important role in power system safety, economy and reliability. For these reasons, the research of fault location is always a hot point in either China or abroad.This paper is widely read in the domestic and international transmission line fault location on the basis of the relevant literature summarized previous research findings, analysis of various impedance of the existing location algorithm and the traveling wave location algorithm principle, characteristics. The comprehensive study on the basis of the results presented a complete set of fault information system applicable to the location program. Ranging programs to the existing hardware based on the conditions, including the two-terminal impedance ranging algorithm, but also single-ended impedance location algorithm to double-synchronization algorithm-based, single-location algorithm for the main side of communication failure auxiliary use. The unit into the high voltage transmission line fault information for the actual test results showed that the superior performance of the algorithm, the results of the study on similar projects with the guidance of a higher value.Finally, the prospects in the research and application of fault location algorithms are described.
