| Urban squares are vital parts of urban public space, reflecting each city's historical culture and artistic style and symbolizing the spirit of city living. Public squares provide space for people to rest and communicate. They are an important part of improving daily communication and enriching city living. That's the why research around urban public squares is one of the hottest topic these days when it comes to urban planning and design. For many years, due to the emphasis on functional compartmentalization, economic profits and design formality, we've lost sight of users'behavioral and psychological needs. This has caused a lack of human factors in the development of some urban squares. The focus of this thesis is how to apply the vision of humanized design to the actual development of urban squares, and how to manifest the human interest in urban public space. The thesis is structured into these four following chapters:The first chapter examines the major problems in developing urban squares in China, explaining the background information and the purpose of this research. The second chapter reviews the development process of urban squares in China and abroad, looking at the different background, conditions and hunman characters of public square designs from various periods and their impact on future design. The third chapter, upon understanding the theories of humanized design, elaborates on the definition of humanized design and what it really means, identify the significance of humanized design. There are also recommendations of a few essential factors in designing public square spaces, surroundings and connections between them, based on analysis of how people behave in public squares and its characteristics. The final chapter, in conjunction with a case study of the Spring City Square, studies the realization and application of humanized design in actual development projects. The conclusion summarizes the entire article, recognizing the practice of designing humanized urban public squares and its long exploration process. |
