People's live is getting more and more abundant as well as increasing leisure time could be devoted to business activities with the development of economic. The square of Commercial Pedestrian Street is the desired product of the time. As an important part of urban public space, the square becomes the central part of the Commercial Pedestrian Street and the it plays an increasingly important role in the composition of functions, space and substances of the Commercial Pedestrian Street. However, some not humanized design have appeared in squares of Commercial Pedestrian Streets, such as the lack of facilities and participation of squares, and a lot of squares are similar in styles too. Aiming to solve these problems, the paper investigated the relationship between man and the material environment of square in the view of human caring as well as discussed the method of humanization design which aims at satisfying all kinds of needs.Based on the current research, the paper analyzed the components of square in the Commercial Pedestrian Street according to the relevant theories and research methods. Then, some researches have been done on three plazas in Commercial Pedestrian Streets of Wuhan. The methods of observation, interviewing have been used to acquire the user's attributes. And with the observation of the behavior and tracks, user's behavior characteristics have been acquired as well. To summarize the information obtained in researches, the paper used diagrams, photographs and other ways to reproduce the user's attributes stopovers, tracks, types of activities and time they spent in squares. Then, the user's cognition and evaluation of the square have been known by random sampling questionnaires, interviewing and other methods. Diagrams, photographs, cognitive maps have been used to show the cognition of the square. A kind of diagram called “SD” and interview materials have been used to show the user's evaluation of the square.Based on a lot of first-hand information, the paper analyzed the behavioral characteristics of users of different gender and age with diagrams, photographs, etc. Then, the paper summarized user's types and distribution of activities, as well as the psychological and behavioral characteristics. Then, the different requires of the square have been shown. Diagrams and photographs have been used to analyze the distribution of activities which is largely affected by user's behavior and material environment of square. Then the paper analyzed the causes of the tracks in square and summarized the relationship between the different tracks and the material environment of square. After analyzing the negative and positive impact caused by the environment, the attractive characteristics of square have been revealed based on which the interest centers of square come out. Interest centers are those sites which can attract a large number of users and make them stay a long time as well, or contributing to a variety of activities. Then, analysis of the constituent elements of the square have been made, so did the behavioral predisposing factor and the differences attractiveness of each interest center. The interaction between man and the material environment of square has been revealed through the analysis of the research results which made it clear that humanized design should consider different psychological and behavioral characteristics of users of the square and satisfy the needs of all levels. Finally, the design method has been put forward in these aspects shown as follows: select of location, creating small space, small landscape design, the create of place for rest, micro-climate control and culture expression. With the targeted design approach, the paper hopes to provide some useful guidance in the humanization design of squares of Commercial Pedestrian Street.
