Along with the development of our country's economy and increased demand for energy sources, exploitation of benthonic petroleum is more and more important. In order to satisfy the requirements for exploitation and transportation of benthonic petroleum and daily life on platform, it is important that power system of marine petroleum platform operates safely. Relay protection as a protector of power system takes main responsibility. Logical layout and setting of relay protection not only can let all protecting equipment cooperate in harmony, as also can reduce losing caused by fault. Now the development of calculating the setting value is very mature, but it mainly faces the power system on the land. At present there is not uniform prescript about the calculation of the setting value in power system of marine petroleum platform. So this subject has theoretic and practice value.Firstly, the paper introduces the power system of marine petroleum platform and its work condition, analyses its characteristics, and gives the particularity of its protection layout compared with the power system on the land. Then the methods of calculating the protection setting value of all electrical component and sensitivity correction are put forward. Thirdly, the paper analyses the problems of the operation between two different kinds of protection and gives the ways how to solve them. So the design about protection of the power system of marine petroleum platform is perfect.Finally, the paper researches the problem about overvoltage of marine cable. The capacity of the marine cable is more than overhead line's. So the overvoltage of marine cable is appeared more easily when its length reaches some level, even if its length is less. When the value of overvoltage is low, the regulating transformer with load can be used. If the value of overvoltage is high, shunt reactor should be used to restrain the capacitance current. According to the time-varying work condition, the controllable shunt reactor is put forward. It can let the power system of marine petroleum platform operate steadily at rated voltage. The paper can increase worked efficiency and reduce mistake in design.
