In the coastal regions of our country, the soft soil layer scope is extremely broad, and many buildings have to been constructed on this kind of soil. Because of high water content, high compressibility and low intensity, this kind of soil must be treated by the foundation reinforcement. Vacuum preloading method is a commonly foundation reinforcement approach in practice. Vacuum preloading method has many advantages, such as fast loading, saving loading materials, being stability during the loading. Therefore, this method spends shorter time of construction period and save costs.Based on the previous works of the predecessors, this article firstly discusses the mechanism of vacuum preloading method, and makes a comparison among some domestic viewpoints explaining the mechanism of vacuum preloading method in recent years, and analyses some long-standing dispute problems--the change of groundwater level during reinforcing period and influenced depth and so on. This article analyses the features of vacuum preloading method by contrast between vacuum preloading and loading method. The author also makes some researches to the consolidation processes and simply discussion to the influent factors of reinforcement effectiveness.Then this article detailedly analyses drain wells and prefabricated drains being used in vacuum preloading method. According to the resistance criterion-G/F(n),this article analyses every index that could influences the resistance of drain wells and prefabricated drains, and plots curves that show the relation between every index and G/F(n). According to above curves, the index that plays important in influencing resistance of drain wells and prefabricated drains could be gotten as well as some useful suggestions. This article also researches the mechanism of the submarine vacuum preloading method, the improvement of vacuum preloading method on land, and gets conclusions that this method is an emerging submarine foundation stabilization method which bases on the vacuum preloading method acting on land, but there are some differences between them.
