The Regeneration Of The Historic Buildings' Field In The Environment Of Modern Cities

Based on the problem of the space and environment of historic buildings in modern cities, the concept of historical buildings' field, is first time to be proposed for the purpose of seeking integrated design methods about the space environment of historic buildings, providing theoretical support of protecting of historic buildings and regeneration of it's space and environment.Firstly, this paper explained the concept of field, buildings field, and historical buildings' field, and analyzed of the types about the field of historic buildings . According to the spatial patterns: closed type, center type, patches type, composition field type, amorphous field type. According to the historic buildings' character: introversive field, extroverted field, and directional extroverted field. The relationship between the urban spatial structure and the field of historic buildings is summarized by its characteristics: the selectivity of human activities, the cultural significance of integrity, the continuity of the space image, the identifiability of genius loci, the diversity of functional components". Secondly, the design principle: "protection above all, people-oriented, integrated design, sustainable development" is raised and strategy is taken about of the field of historic buildings: "active protection, integrated creation". Thirdly, this paper used "neumann, borders, furnishings" as the composing elements of historical architecture's field and analyzed design points of these elements, including the protection of historical architecture, vertical interface, architectural styles, colors, facade continuity, the features of integrated horizon line, scale and location of the hatch and furnishings etc, then summarized all of these and promote the theoretical framework to a method of urban design about the space and environment of historic buildings in modern cities.Finally, through the theory construction of historic buildings' field, this paper chose xi'an bell and drum towers as a case study, analyzed the process of its emergence and evolvement. Based on its existing problems, made some new ideas and proposals of protection and regeneration about xi'an bell and drum towers. It may establish foundation about the regeneration or related research and projects planning with a strongly value of guiding in design practice in the future.
