Ancient pagoda constructions are known as the outstanding representatives of the ancient high-rise building in China. It is a bright pearl in the history of Chinese architectue which are symbolized wisdom and creativity of the ancient Chinese working people, and it is the pride of the Chinese nation. According to the statistics, there are more than 3,000 of these ancient pagoda which have differrent type and structure such as stone pagoda, timber pagoda, iron pagoda, masonry pagoda and glazed pagoda left all over the country. The Small Goose Pagoda which is located in the jianfu temple of the south city wall of xi'an is had not tall and straight and beauty body but an experience of 1,300 years.The Small Goose Pagoda has subjected to the weathering and more than 70 times earthquake since the building. Based on the research of the information of history earthquake damage and the relevant reinforcement in 1964, and on the origin, evolution and development and the characteristics of the structure of the ancient pagoda., a scientific and reasonable assumption of the subgrade and foundation of the small goose pagoda is presented in this paper. The finite element analysis software ANSYS is used to analyse the dynamic properties and the earthquake-resistantof the assumption model, thus to achieve scientific and rational verification of the assumption model, and this can also provide research and reference information of the masonry ancient pagodas.The focus of this paper are as follows:1. The origin, development and evolution, characteristics of the structure and the existing masonry ancient pagodas has been analyzed.2. The characteristics of the structure and the history of earthquake damage of the Small Goose Pagoda has been analyzed in this paper.3. Based on the known information of foundation of the Small Goose Pagoda ,and on the reasonablity of the structure to assume that the unknown, two possible formal foundation have been proposed, and the slanting foundation is as the object of research in the end. Based on the theory of earthquake engineering and finite element analysis software ANSYS, which has analyse the dynamic properties of the Small Goose Pagoda, including the mode and time of course. To verify the rationality and scientification of the model is by the historical crack and damage information.The results show that the assumption of slant-type and ladder-type foundation of the Small Goose Pagoda is reasonable in theory, and the structure of ladder-type foundation is feasible in practice.
