With the development of information technique and modern power electronics, the power quality had contented to the people and had become a most important problem for the power department and customers. In the recent years, many kinds of systems for regulating power quality had been developed. Because most of them work for the unitary or special target, these regulators have satisfied with the customers for the multi-targets and coordinating control. And the superconducting magnet energy storage system (SMES) is prior to theses regulator in real-time and stability performance. Consequently, it is one of the important development directions for modern power electronics that the SMES is applied to improving the performance of power system.SMES can storage the electricity energy by means of magnetic field which is produced by the circle current, which can exchange the active and reactive power with the system and ran four quadrant and flexibly and improve stability of the power system effectively. On condition that the SMES is controlled effectively by the appropriate control strategy, the static response speed is improved very much. Meantime, the static response speed for the gusty incident is faster to the other systems.In the paper, mathematics model, function principle, charging and discharging modes are analyzed and discussed for VSC SMES in the three-phase balance. The switching elements, inductance, and capacitance for the main circuit are designed. And the cushion and protection circuit, control circuit, and drive circuit are analyzed and designed. The control strategy based on the SVPWM of the converter and the hysteretic control method of the current conditioning system are researched in-depth for VSC SMES, and the parameter of the PI regulator against integration saturation is designed. After the hardware circuit based on the DSP is established, the function principle and control strategy of VSC SMES are proved by the simulation and experimentation. The feasibility of the control scheme and the truth of the theoretic analysis are proved by the simulation and experiment results.
