Substation plays an important role in power system, and it is extremely important for power system in running safely and economically, because it converts and distributes power energy. Substation communication networks connects the various substation IEDs (intelligent electronic devices, IEDs), which is the substation automation system's lifeblood, and the system's availability is decided by its real-time performance and reliability. IEC 61850 standard, is the only international standard based on the universal network communication platform for substation automation system. The purpose of the standard is to realize interoperability for substation IEDs from different manufactures. IEC 61850 will become the best solution for the substation seamless communication, it has represented the substation automation future development direction, and its implementation will certainly promote the substation automation level.Firstly, this paper presents the IEC 61850 standard architecture and its main characteristics, and then the service models and its corresponding mapping services defined in the standard are analyzed. According to the substation communication networks performance requirements, the substation communication networks structure based on the IEC 61850 standard is presented; the feasibility of applying Ethernet technology to the substation communication networks is adequately researched. Analysis of the substation messages transmission delay and its impact factors, and several methods which can improve the real-time performance are discussed in this paper. On the basis of analysis of data flow within a substation, mathematical models of different kind of data flow within substation is established, and presents the IEC 61850 message type and its property; Station networks simulation model is established by using OPNET software, and the real-time performance of the station networks which is based switched or shared Ethernet network is simulated. The system's reliability index to assess the reliability of the system is presented, analysis of several analysis methods which applied to substation communications network reliability. On the basis of fault tree analysis, the method which converts the fault tree to Bayesian networks is purposed. Finally, based on Bayesian analysis of the reliability of methods, the substation communication networks with the different topology are theoretically analyzed.
