For a long time, due to the absence of solid data facility and quantitative research method, the study of our country's urban space expansion still limited to the describing research, index calculation and general quantity evaluation, but lack of systematic and micro space research. Therefore it can not deeply reveal the trend of urban space development, especially the influence of urban planning management to city's micro mechanism and development. As a result, the assessment and adjustment of urban planning can not catch up with the demand of modern urban planning, which seriously restricted the effect and science of urban planning, as well as the management authority of city government. With the development of computer science, the spread of geographical information system and the establishment of city's data base have made a technical foundation for solving the above-mentioned problems. Owing to the improvement of computer hardware and software designing, the calculation cost of complicated data has greatly reduced. Moreover, the development and popularization of geographical information system provide abundant data for city simulation, which make the city's outline forecast become more scientific.First of all, this article introduced the theoretical and technical foundation of urban space expansion study. Discipline cross theory, urban planning theory, Comprehensive theory, practice theory become the theoretical foundation of it. Based on the technical foundation, on the one hand, the characteristic of urban space expansion study has an urgent demand on the new technology of information age, which can greatly improve the traditional planning skill.
