The Ethical Sense Of Modern Architecture

The modern architecture movement rosing in the 1920s was a great revolution ,which has impacted on the historical development of human construction. It was a constructional method and paradigm which was explored by a group of advanced intellectuals with democratic thinking and leftist trend on the industrial conditions.This article reviewed and revealed the ethics sense of the modern architecture from the point of ethics view. The paper first briefed about the basic contents of ethics and architectural ethics. Then focused on four chapters about the origins of ethical thinking, the exploration of ethical connotations, the construction of ethical instruction, the decline of ethical spirit to elaborate the entire process of the modern architecture movement, thus revealed the essence of the modern architecture movement was a architectural revolution on the ethical dimensions: modern architecture masters viewed "good" as the starting point of the architectural design and the judgement standards of the value of construction; they interrogated traditional architecture in the name of ethics, castigating the decadent, degenerate and deceptive of the classical architecture; they tried to create a new type of society by architectural design to change the phenomenon that construction was only serviced for a few powerful people since thousand years ago; they viewed democracy and public as the spirit of the times, thinking that the residential design for ordinary people was the most urgent task. Finally, author returned to the reality to analyze and discuss the ethical problems of contemporary Chinese architecture, and expressed personal views.
