In the water treatment project practice at home and abroad, the quartz sand media is used widely. But it has a lot of disadvantages as the traditional filters medium, it has bigger head loss, shorter filtration period and lower comprehensive technological benefit. To solve this problem, this paper has proposed a modified approach-the filtering experiment of triple media filter at the water treatment plant of Zhong Ying in Da Qing.With its good physics and mechanics performance, the triple media filter is been increasingly applied to water treatment. Thereby, to study the application of the triple media filter to the filter craft of supply water has the great theoretical and realistic meaning. This paper, on the base of reviewing systematically the development of filter bed and filtering medium, makes a relatively systemic experiment research and theory analysis for the performance of the triple media filter.The triple media filter is composed of anthracite coal, quartz sand and magnetite.Firstly, some post model experiments on this media have been done in the water treatment plant of Zhong Ying in Da Qing in order to confirm its optimal filter velocity and filtration bed thickness, then the filter was tested in the conventional rapid filter to production test.The comparative experiments of removing suspended matters from raw water between the triple media filter and quartz sand media filter have been done firstly. The conclusion is that the triple media filter has a lot of advantages over the sand filter. It has good quality of little hydraulic pressure loss, longer filtration period and powerful decontamination ability. The results also indicate that every filter layers of the triple media filter has capabilities of filtration so that it can give full play to the decontamination ability and the ability of shock loading.In this paper, by studying the ratio removal rate of turbidity and the head loss under the condition of different depth of filter layer and filtering velocity, we gain the optimal filtering velocity for the ratio removal rate of turbidity.As back flushing is the key of renewing and keeping up the function of filter, some factors of back flush have been studied. So we gain the optimum operating parameter of air-water backwash time and strength for the triple media filter.
