Because the electromagnetic railgun, a new concept kinetic energy weapon, has a lot of unique advantages of faster launch velocity, shorter accelerating time and easier controlling of release energy, it can find the broad prospect in the military realm. The cost is increased because the railgun requires high quality for the power, the material of the rails and the switch. In addition, there is the mechanical, electrical and thermal interaction in the launching process. Taking into account deeper research and the cost, it is necessary to study the whole process depend on the simulation technology. Theory analysis, designing model and compute simulation are realized in this paper.Firstly,the paper reviews the present situation of development of the railgun in aspects of domestic and abroad, compare all kinds of railgun and analyze the present course of the simulation on the railgun.Secondly, the basic principle of the railgun is introduced and the work process, especial in launching process, is analyzed in detail.Thirdly, the railgun system is modelized by modularization modeling method on the analysis of the work process.Finally, a simulation model of the railgun system is established in MATLAB/Simulink software. The influence of pre-charged voltage of driving capacitor, viscous forces and the voltage of the plasma armature is analyzed quantitatively. The research work of this paper is summaried and some advices of a deeper research on modeling and simulation of the railgun system is given.
