In traditional steel structure design, the nodal connections often were treated as two idealizations: fully rigid or ideally pinned. Ideal connection models simplify the analysis procedure but test research and engineering practice indicated that : the real behavior of connections between the two extreme sample. For reasonably evaluate the real performance of structure, must take semi-rigid connection into account. The semi-rigid connection were mentioned in China steel structure design code(GB50017-2003),but there no method for analysis or design. So,it's necessary research semi-rigid connection of steel frames, establish the design method and construction measure. This paper researched semi-rigid steel frames from construction measure and property of semi-rigid connection. Based on representative semi-rigid connection and models of connection,a general model of semi-rigid connection that take semi-rigid connection apart from frame beams and columns as connection element was presented. Refer to spring model, this model was built with the method used to calculate variational stiffness beam. The stiffness matrix of connection element was deduced also. A calculation example using the slope-deflection method with connection element method was presented. Compare zero connection assume with limited length connection assume, the effects of connection length on the frames moment distribution and the frames horizontal displacements was researched. The analysis of second-order effect using connection element method was introduced, the route map of the second-order effect analysis was given. At last, this paper point the direction of next research. This paper's research results and method can be used in analysis of structure internal force and deformation of semi-rigid steel frames. This method is valuable and useful in the analysis of semi-rigid steel frames .
